Origin: “Three Sheets” with Zane Lamprey

Steve McKenna and I went to college together. We had a blast. We’ve since remained friends. He was in my wedding party (well, he would have been if he remembered to book his plane ticket) and has remained one of my best friends.

I decided, before the show was shot, that I would turn the show into a drinking game. But I didn’t tell anyone right away because I anticipated that the network would have shot it down. I was going to “leak” the rules on my web site, they would be blogged by other people, and the game would be forever solidified. One of the rules was going to be “Whenever I tell a story about a friend of mine, you have to drink.” In the first episode I told a few stories about Steve. None made it to air, but the crew fell in love with him and wanted to hear more. By the next episode, Mike Kelly had run it by the network and miraculously got it approved. So, the rule became: “Whenever I talk about Steve McKenna, it’s a social.”

Everybody knows someone like Steve. He is one of the nicest, most compassionate and best friends you could have. He’s the first guy to come over with his tools when your pipes burst and your basement gets flooded. He’ll watch your kids without hesitation (he has four kids of his own—all girls). He also gives good advice and will give it to you straight. He is a bit of a practical jokester, but it’s always in good fun.

HOWEVER! When Steve drinks enough (or rather, too much), at some point a switch flips and he goes from being “Steve” to “Steve McKenna.” I have more drinking stories about Steve than I do of my own. Now, in every country I meet a Steve McKenna. Steve McKennas are harmless. A Steve McKenna who seems like he could go crazy at any moment is actually called a “ski patrol.
