Drinking My Way Around the World
    by Zane Lamprey

For the past three years, I’ve hosted a television show called “Three Sheets” which previously aired for three seasons on a channel called MOJO HD. My job has taken me to over 50 international destinations to, in a word, drink. It’s a pretty good job. Not only because I am gainfully employed doing something that most people consider a leisure time activity, but because as I do it, I get a truly authentic experience from the countries I visit.

When traveling, most tourists choose to learn about a country by learning about its history. It’s true that a tour guide pointing out statues and monuments that pay homage to a country’s wars, plagues, dictators and famines says a lot about a country that exists today. However, in my humble (albeit experienced) opinion, the best way to learn about a country is by talking with the people that live there. And nothing works better as a social lubricant (proportionally so), and gets people to open up more than by buying a round of drinks. more than by buying a round of drinks. Spend $100 on a bus tour and you’ll see the land and learn about its history. Spend $100 in a pub and you’ll learn about the people who made the land and who live the history… And you’ll also walk away with some new friends.

While shooting four seasons of “Three Sheets,” I’ve visited countless wateringholes, drank innumerable libations, and had my share of debilitating hangovers. I’ve thrown back the finest Champagnes  and Cognac in their respective regions in France. I’ve knocked backed Viper Rum in Belize, Kaoliang infused with snake blood in Taipei, and booze that doubles as a preservative for armadillos in Saigon (Ho Chi Minh). I’ve done shots of 172-proof and bubble-gum flavored Lambanog in the Philippines. I’ve sipped from a $10,000 bottle of Scotch in Scotland and guzzled a $400 beer in Denmark. And I’ve done enough shots of vodka in Moscow to make the people I was drinking with think that breaking out their Kalashnikov AK-74 automatic machine gun was a good idea. Some of the good stuff makes it to the show—most doesn’t.
